SS3 Event Wrapup
Thursday, 9 June 2011
After the Newcastle club successfully held one of their summer BOSS events on a foot orienteering map of Brush Creek it was decided that if the map were updated to MTBO standards it could be used for a Super Series event. Being a fairly small area but with an extensive single track network we thought it suited a middle distance format best.
There
was plenty of rain in the two weeks leading up to the event but thankfully the last two days were rain free. The tracks were still wet and the usual posse of motorbikes were out ripping them up some more. However, 55 competitors still turned up to face the starter, most of whom made it around unscathed although somewhat muddy. Most of the post race comments were about the navigational challenge rather than the bike riding difficulties. (There were some constructive comments about the map too which I will take on board. The not-so constructive comments I will ignore!)
The courses were somewhat shorter than the guidelines suggested for a middle distance event but the winning times were still a little bit long. I think that if it had been dry then maybe the winning times would have been close to the guidelines.
A big thank you to those who turned up and competed and an even bigger thank you to those who
helped me out on the day…Carolyn Matthews and Tim Hackney on registration and finish, Joshua Roberts at the start, David West at set up and finally Damien Welbourne, Steven Todkill, Matt Bacon, Alex Massey and Joshua Roberts for control collection.
